Cheesy Grins All Round!

Cubs

Our hungry Cubs traded their woggles for whisks last week as they embarked on a delicious culinary adventure – learning to make classic macaroni cheese and scrumptious garlic bread! The air in the community centre was filled with the irresistible aromas of melting cheese and toasted garlic, promising a feast fit for a king (or a very happy Cub!).

Under the watchful eyes of our fantastic leaders, the Cubs transformed into mini-chefs, eager to master new kitchen skills. The session began with the macaroni cheese. Teams carefully measured out ingredients, learning about the importance of precision in cooking. There was much excitement as the butter sizzled, the flour was stirred into a roux, and then, the magical moment – the milk was slowly added, transforming into a thick, creamy white sauce.

"Stirring the sauce was my favourite bit!" exclaimed one Cub, proudly showing off his smooth concoction. "It smelled so good when the cheese went in."

Indeed, the addition of grated cheese brought out cheers as it melted into a golden, gooey dream. The cooked macaroni was then folded in, creating that comforting, classic dish everyone loves.

But the culinary fun didn't stop there! Next up was the perfect accompaniment: garlic bread. Cubs carefully buttered slices of bread, then delicately sprinkled them with chopped garlic and a pinch of parsley. They learned about the importance of not overdoing the garlic (though some brave souls might have disagreed!).

One Cub shared, "I usually just eat garlic bread, but now I know how to make it! It's actually really easy, and it tastes even better when you make it yourself."

Beyond the delicious outcome, the session was packed with valuable lessons. The Cubs practiced essential skills like following instructions, teamwork, measuring, and even knife safety (with appropriate supervision, of course!). They learned about hygiene in the kitchen and the satisfaction of creating something from scratch.

The best part? At the end of the session, everyone got to sample their creations. Faces lit up with cheesy grins as the Cubs tucked into their homemade macaroni cheese and warm, fragrant garlic bread. There were plenty of happy murmurs and requests for seconds!

A huge round of applause to all the leaders who organised this fantastic and tasty activity. It's safe to say that many of our Cubs will be asking to help out in the kitchen at home this week, armed with their new skills and a newfound appreciation for home-cooked food.

What a wonderfully warming and educational session! We can't wait to see what other amazing skills our Cubs will be mastering next. Perhaps a dessert challenge is on the horizon?
