Tiny Tacklers and Try-Scoring Titans
The Beavers section was a hive of energetic activity last week as our youngest Scouts swapped their usual games for a thrilling introduction to the world of rugby! With mini-rugby balls in hand and huge smiles on their faces, our Beavers dove headfirst into learning the basics of this dynamic team sport.
The session, led by some enthusiastic leaders with a passion for rugby, focused on the fun and fundamental elements of the game, adapted perfectly for our five to eight-year-olds. Safety and enjoyment were top priorities, with an emphasis on touch rugby rather than full contact.
The Beavers started with some energetic warm-up games, getting their bodies ready to run, jump, and weave. Then came the exciting part: learning how to pass the rugby ball! It's not as easy as it looks, but with patient guidance and lots of practice, our Beavers quickly got the hang of the backwards pass, giggling as the ball spiralled (or sometimes wobbled!) to their teammates.
"I liked throwing the ball backwards," said one Beaver, demonstrating their new skill. "It was tricky but really fun when it went to my friend!"
Next, it was time to run with the ball. Leaders encouraged the Beavers to weave and dodge, practicing their footwork and agility. There were some fantastic displays of speed and determination as the Beavers tried to make it to the "try line" – a simple marker that became the most exciting place on the field!
The session culminated in some friendly, non-contact rugby games. It was incredible to see how quickly the Beavers picked up the rules, working together to pass the ball down the line and try to score. There was fantastic communication, with Beavers shouting "Mine!" or "Pass!" and celebrating every successful move.
Beyond the physical activity, the rugby session was a brilliant way for our Beavers to develop key scouting values. They learned about teamwork, understanding that working together helps everyone succeed. They practiced listening to instructions, showed great sportsmanship, and experienced the joy of active play. It also introduced them to a new sport, potentially sparking a lifelong interest!
A huge thank you to our wonderful leaders who brought the spirit of rugby to our Beavers, making it an engaging, safe, and incredibly fun experience for all.
What a fantastic and active session! Our Beavers proved that even the youngest among us can tackle new challenges with enthusiasm and a great attitude. Who knows, we might have some future rugby stars in our ranks!
